Stages of questions that will be asked during Viva
- General, key content of your thesis (concept).
- They will go deeper into the thesis.
- Speculative questions - outside your thesis but related which you could use your thesis to answer those questions. Try to find the connection (You need to have enough knowledge of the related field to your thesis).
- Conclusion - How you reach to this point and what is this for future?
What the examiners want from you
- First 30 minutes, the examiners will observe your personality.
- The ability to investigate deeper in your subject.
- Keep asking yourself - how, when, why, where. Elaborate precisely the cause and effect.
- Let them challenge you on things you know.
Self-preparations:
- Your brain needs 3 hours to wake up. Have plenty of time before Viva. Have a good sleep.
- Rehearsed and review concept and table content of your thesis during those few hours before Viva.
- A quick summary of your thesis
- Table content of the thesis
- Classify which chapter you know very well, which chapter you confuse and which chapter you don't know very well (identify and know your weaknesses or the thesis's weakness)
- Know your weakness and think of how you will manage it?
- Practice your mouth muscles before Viva
- Wake your muscles to speak clearly and confidently.
- Have a self-confident
- It's now or never
- Go with full confidence with all you have
- I have done my best, and I will do and show you my best. I am going to fight for my thesis.
- Defend your thesis to the best of your ability/intelligent.
- Don't say "I could have done this", but say "I have done my best".
- The examiners are also nervous - smile at them
- You need to know how to reduce tension during discussion/Viva.
- Stay calm, polite, never get angry, never upset.
- Need to have people management skills.
- Attitude when answering questions
- Maintain a positive attitude - be open-minded and intelligent.
- Never admit you made a mistake
- Be confident even if you made a mistake
- Just say, I have done my best
- Compliment the examiners' questions
- Speculative answer
- Used to answer a question that is beyond your knowledge.
- Q: It is true that two meteors are heading to Earth?
- A: It is true the new has been spread but if it is factual truth, I am not sure.
- Exact answer
- Give an exact answer when answering question-related to your field.
- Q: ...
- A: As far as I know...
- Confident
- Use your voice. Even if your not very sure, but speculate with confidence.
- Q: ...
- A: There could be several reasons...
- Question on something very minute about the thesis
- A: In my view...
- When you have a difficult question or something you didn't do in your study
- They can be done for future work because of my limited time and space
- I imagine, I would think (must come out with possible answers)
- They may be an exception to it, but I am not aware of it.
Asking questions
- To ask politely to refer to your thesis:
- Q: I am not entirely sure about this, I would like to refer to my thesis.
- Q: I would like to refresh my memory, could I refer to my thesis, please?
Attitude:
- It's my big day, it's my most beautiful day.
- Today is the day, I have been waiting for this day for three years.
- It's my celebration day.
- Have confidence.
- Stick to what you know/understand.
- Always think positive about yourself.
- Do not tell lies, stay courteous, honest.
- Stay calm, polite, never get angry, never upset.
- I have done my best instead of I have done very well (Stay humble)
- When you enter, don't take a seat until they say it.
- Say good morning to them first if they didn't say anything to you when you come in.
- Show good etiquette.
- Don't say anything more.
- Say thank you very much, bow a little and leave the room properly at the end of Viva.
